How do you insulate the bathroom thermally?
The materials used for thermal insulation are porous or fibrous, such as mineral wool (rock or glass wool), expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, polyurethane foam or cork, among others. What types of insulation materials are there?
• Glass wool. Glass wool is manufactured by dissolving sand to a high degree of silica, calcium carbonate, borax and magnesium. It is generally very light, pliable and yellow, pink, or white. They can be found loose and on mats, either as sheets or rolls. It is one of the most widely used heat insulators in the world, and it is also an excellent sound absorber.
• Mineral wool. Mineral wool is made from igneous rocks that have a high content of silica and small amounts of basalt and calcium carbonate. It is denser than fiberglass and most of it is gray with black spots, although there are also some that are almost white. Their high melting point allows them to maintain their insulating properties unchanged even at very high temperatures. They come in preformed mats, coils, blocks and valves.
How do we put thermal insulation for the bathroom?
If you want to learn how to install thermal insulation for repairing a bathroom, follow this step by step:
1. Take out the hole. Then a room is left and mineral wool is placed on the back of the wall by mechanical fasteners.
2. Apply a special mortar to stabilize this material.
3. Tiles with a hollow brick, to which you must later add the finishing plaster. This type of solution offers an improvement in the thermal and acoustic protection of the wall that will depend on the technical characteristics of the mineral wool used and its thickness.
4. Proceed to lining the walls and floors.

The technology of installing cork insulation is quite simple; They are glued to the walls and ceiling of the room in the same way as wallpaper. To install a cork heat insulator, you must use special cork adhesives.

In order to prevent heat from escaping into the floor, various insulation materials are used: expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene foam and polyurethane foam.

The use of foam boards is extremely rare. This is due to the low density and rigidity of the foam boards. The material is brittle and can release harmful substances when heated.

Extruded polystyrene foam has slightly improved properties compared to foam: stiffness, rigidity, vapor permeability and high thermal insulation. But this material, in order to ensure the required level of thermal insulation, requires the application of large (more than 5 cm) insulation layers. This significantly raises the level of the floor, especially when considering the layer of the heating element, the leveling layer and the decorative coating (laminate, ceramic tiles, etc.). When applying a concrete screed, to ensure the required strength, the floor must be additionally reinforced with a reinforcing mesh.

Before installing the heat-insulating layer, it is necessary to lay a waterproofing film or to prepare the surface with penetrating waterproofing agents.

The most reasonable is to create a heat-insulating layer using polyurethane foam. This material has the lowest level of thermal conductivity, so it is enough to apply a relatively small layer of material (2 cm) to ensure the required level of insulation. Moreover, polyurethane foam has the properties of a vapor-conducting membrane, which allows moisture to pass through from the base, but does not allow it to penetrate deeply into the heat insulator.
Before installing the heat-insulating layer, it is necessary to lay a waterproofing film or to prepare the surface with penetrating waterproofing agents.
A good solution for heating the bathroom floor is an underfloor heating system.

At the initial stage, it is necessary to take care of high-quality waterproofing of the floor of the room, where there is moisture. It settles on the walls of the bathroom, gradually flows down and accumulates on the floor. Fall-off (soil) or adhesive-type waterproofing (water barrier films) are used as waterproofing agents.

If the task is to eliminate the penetration
Moisture completely, it is better to use liquid rubber as a waterproofing agent.

In a warm floor base, a heating system with electric elements can be used, the gaps between which are filled with special mixtures, the base is made by the obligatory creation of a waterproofing layer.

The underfloor heating system has a large heating capacity due to the relatively large heating area. Due to this, it is not necessary to create high temperatures for heating the room.

Today there are many insulation materials that are used in cases where it is cold in the bathroom. Some of them have been used for a very long time, while others are relatively recent. Among all this diversity, the following can be distinguished:

The most common option for insulating the walls of the bathroom is mineral wool. This is not surprising, because this insulation, due to its characteristics, allows you to avoid the appearance of condensation, as the walls continue to "breathe". But this insulation also has negative features. In this case, we are talking about a high hygroscopicity. That is, so that steam and moisture do not have a negative effect on the material, while insulating the walls in the bathroom, it is necessary to insulate them.
Wax-saturated cork insulation for the bathroom is somewhat more expensive than the first option, but at the same time it is very effective. The insulation process itself is not very complicated and includes two main stages:
• Surface priming
• Adhesive cork insulation using a special glue.
Styrofoam is known for its low cost. Depending on the type of finish, it must be glued to the surface, or inserted into a frame made of a galvanized profile, which is especially important for those cases when drywall is used as a finishing material.
